The Generating Function for Total Displacement
نویسندگان
چکیده
In a 1977 paper, Diaconis and Graham studied what Knuth calls the total displacement of a permutation w, which is the sum of the distances |w(i)−i|. In recent work of the first author and Tenner, this statistic appears as twice the type An−1 version of a statistic for Coxeter groups called the depth of w. There are various enumerative results for this statistic in the work of Diaconis and Graham, codified as exercises in Knuth’s textbook, and some other results in the work of Petersen and Tenner. However, no formula for the generating function of this statistic appears in the literature. Knuth comments that “the generating function for total displacement does not appear to have a simple form.” In this paper, we translate the problem of computing the distribution of total displacement into a problem of counting weighted Motzkin paths. In this way, standard techniques allow us to express the generating function for total displacement as a continued fraction.

First Principles Derivation of Displacement and Stress Function for Three-Dimensional Elastostatic Problems, and Application to the Flexural Analysis of Thick Circular Plates
In this study, stress and displacement functions of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity for homogeneous isotropic bodies are derived from first principles from the differential equations of equilibrium, the generalized stress – strain laws and the geometric relations of strain and displacement. It is found that the stress and displacement functions must be biharmonic functions. The deriv...
متن کاملPerturbative Approach to Calculating the Correlation Function of bi-isotropic Metamaterials
A bi-isotropic magneto-electric metamaterials is modeled by two independent reservoirs. The reservoirs contain a continuum of three dimensional harmonic oscillators, which describe polarizability and magnetizability of the medium. The paper aimed to investigate the effect of electromagnetic field on bi-isotropic. Starting with a total Lagrangian and using Euler-Lagrange equation, researcher cou...
متن کاملA Mthod for Generating the Turbulent Intermittency Function
A detection method based on sensitization of a squared double differentiated signal is developed which discriminates the turbulent zones from laminar zones quite accurately. The procedure adopts a variable threshold and a variable hold time of the order of the Kolmogorov time scale. The output file so generated, includes all the information for further analysis of the turbulent signal.
متن کاملTorsion of Poroelastic Shaft with Hollow Elliptical Section
In this paper torsion of hollow Poroelastic shaft with Elliptical section is developed. Using the boundary equation scheme. It looks for a stress function where satisfied Poisson equation and vanishes on boundary. It also analyzed stress function and warping displacement for the hollow elliptical section in Poroelastic shaft. At the end, the result of elastic and poroelastic shaft in warping di...
متن کاملTutte polynomials of wheels via generating functions
We find an explicit expression of the Tutte polynomial of an $n$-fan. We also find a formula of the Tutte polynomial of an $n$-wheel in terms of the Tutte polynomial of $n$-fans. Finally, we give an alternative expression of the Tutte polynomial of an $n$-wheel and then prove the explicit formula for the Tutte polynomial of an $n$-wheel.
